1 dead, 5 wounded in shootings

Oct. 19--A woman was killed while four men and a boy were wounded in separate shootings Sunday afternoon on the city's South and Northwest sides.

The fatal shooting happened about 4:25 p.m. in the 7800 block of South Honore Street in the Gresham neighborhood, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago police spokesman.

According to preliminary information, a 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were sitting in a vehicle on Honore when someone approached on foot and opened fire. The woman was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene, Sweeney said. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the woman as Brianna Jenkins, of the 2100 block of West 69th Street. Police said the man is a known gang member. He was taken by friends to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. His condition was unknown, Sweeney said.

The most recent shooting happened just before midnignt, when a 32-year-old man was shot in the 3500 block of East 97th Street, police said. Someone dropped him off at Advocate Trinity Hospital, and he was listed in stable condition with a wound to his abdomen, police said. Officers didn't find a crime scene where the man said he was shot.

About 5:50 p.m., an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were wounded in the 2500 block of North Kilbourn Avenue in the Belmont Gardens neighborhood. The 18-year-old was shot in the back and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition. The boy was taken to Community First Medical Center, where his condition had stabilized. Police said the 18-year-old was a known gang member.

Earlier Sunday, a 40-year-old man was critically wounded in the West Englewood neighborhood. That shooting happened around 3 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Bell Avenue, Sweeney said. According to preliminary information, a man suffered wounds to the chest and was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center, Sweeney said.

Police were investigating.
