1 charged with murder in robbery death of man in Harvey

Dec. 21--A south suburban man charged with shooting and killing a man during an armed robbery in a south suburban forest preserve was ordered held without bail Saturday.

The attack happened on Dec. 5, at 14100 Thornton Road in Harvey, which is in the Kickapoo Meadows Cook County Forest Preserve, according to court records. Vicente Mendoza, 20, shot Jose L. Garcia-Cibrian, 30, in the back and head multiple times, prosecutors said Saturday.

Mendoza, of the 100 block of West 155th Street in Harvey, was charged with murder. In a bond hearing Saturday, Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered Mendoza held without bail.

According to Cook County Sheriff's officials, Garcia-Cibrian's body was found with gunshot wounds after a driver who was passing the area spotted what an unresponsive person about 20 feet from the roadway.

Through a series of interviews and video surveillance, detectives were able to pin down a suspect in the shooting. Mendoza was arrested on Dec. 17 by Harvey police, officials said.

After detectives interviewed Mendoza, he allegedly gave a confession to police in which he admitted having robbed the man of his wallet and cell phone and admitted his role in the homicide, according to sheriff's officials.

Garcia-Cibrian's body remains unclaimed at the Cook County medical examiner's office, according to officials.

Because no one has claimed his body, the medical examiner's office has not released information on where Garcia-Cibrian lived or his autopsy results.
