Briean Boddy-Calhoun signs with the Houston Texans

After three up-and-down seasons in Cleveland, Browns GM John Dorsey decided he’d seen enough of Briean Boddy-Calhoun. The Browns failed to tender a restricted free agent offer to the versatile defensive back, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Now Boddy-Calhoun is the newest member of the Houston Texans. The slot corner/free safety signed a one-year deal worth just under $1 million to join the dilapidated Texans secondary, which has lost starters Kareem Jackson, Tyrann Mathieu and Kevin Johnson in the last week.

The engaging Boddy-Calhoun played three seasons for the Browns after being claimed off waivers from Jacksonville in his rookie training camp. He quickly emerged as a valuable asset, capable of playing all over the secondary. He played quite well as a fill-in free safety for the one game Damarious Randall missed last season, and he was a threat to make plays in as the slot corner throughout most of his Browns tenure.

Erratic tackling and some truly awful games in coverage, notably towards the end of 2018, diminished Boddy-Calhoun’s value to the Browns.

On a personal note, he was one of my favorite players to cover dating back to his draft process coming out of Minnesota. We wish you well, Briean!
