Hotels hit the market as Royal British Legion offloads coastal break sites

A Bridlington hotel owned by the Royal British Legion has been put on the market as one of four the charity is looking to offload nationwide.

Alderson House, a 26-bedroom retreat on the resort’s South Marine Drive is part of a £4.1 million combined package, though an individual sale would be welcomed.

Colliers International has been instructed, with a guide price of £800,000 for the East Yorkshire property.

Also hitting the market is the 47-room Somerset Legion House in Weston-Super-Mare (£1.2m); 36-bedroom Byng House in Southport (£1.65m) and 15-bedroom Bennet House in Portrush, Northern Ireland (£525,000).

They make up the Royal British Legion’s coastal break centres, and are now closed, though described as being in “excellent condition having received significant investment from the charity”.

Surveyor Robert Smithson said: “The high-quality finish of the properties would lend themselves well to a ‘boutique’ style of operation and the extensive public areas would also make the properties suitable for exclusive-use weddings or functions.

“There is also an opportunity for a new owner to capitalise on the renaissance of the UK ‘staycation’ market; particularly in the wake of Covid-19 where coastal and country hotels are considered to be one market, which will bounce back the quickest.”

The Bridlington property features a dining/function room; conservatory; bar; lounge area; reading room; guest laundry room and a hair salon.
