Bridget Galloway to depart Sunderland Ladies after superb season ended in disappointment

Sunderland have confirmed that striker Bridget Galloway is leaving the club.

Galloway joined Sunderland Girls Centre of Excellence at 12 years of age before making her first-team debut in October 2016, coming on as a late substitute for Beth Mead in a 0-0 draw with Notts County.

Galloway made over 60 appearances and scored more than 40 goals for Mel Copeland’s side.

She scored her first goal on 5 December 2017 in a 1-0 WSL Cup win against Liverpool Ladies as she headed in the only goal of the game.

Her departure comes as a blow for the Black Cats as Galloway netted 25 goals in 24 games in all competitions in 2019-20 as Sunderland topped the National League before the FA’s decision to null and void the campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It resulted in Sunderland been denied promotion.

Galloway has also represented England at Under-19 level, She received her first call-up in January 2018 before making her debut against Ireland.

She scored her first goal for the Young Lionesses in March 2018 in a 4-3 win over the Czech Republic.

Galloway's departure comes after Charlotte Potts moved to Hibernian on Sunday after she ended her fourth spell at the club this summer.

Mollie Lambert has also left Wearside to join Durham Ladies in the league above, whilst Katie Barker and Rachel Woolston have departed for local rivals Newcastle United.

A Sunderland statement read "Everyone at SAFC would like to wish Bridget the best of luck for the future".

It's almost inevitable that Galloway will be joining a side in one of the top two tiers if women's football in England.
