Bridgerton viewers in meltdown over Simon Basset's saucy spoon-licking scene

Bridgerton fans have been sent into meltdown over a steamy scene in which Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) seductively licks a spoon.

Netflix's new period drama centres on the unfolding romance between Daphne Bridgerton and Duke Simon Basset in 1800s Regency England and is brimming with steamy scenes and tension.

The popular new Netflix series has caused quite a stir, with episode three's saucy scene leaving viewers quite distracted.

Fans quickly took to social media to express their surprise at the sizzling clip.

"How did this f*** just lick a spoon like that ? #Bridgerton," wrote one viewer.

A second added: "#2020 got me wishing I was a spoon #BRIDGERTON."

"Watching Daphne thirsting over Simon licking a spoon and rolling up his sleeves is a literal mood. Same, Daphne, same," added a third.

Produced by Grey’s Anatomy mastermind Shonda Rhimes’ company, Shondaland, the show has largely been a hit with viewers as they watch the lead characters' romance develop.

However, while the show is packed full of raunchy scenes, the drama also left some viewers divided following a 'sickening' male rape scene in scene six.

In the episode, Daphne coerced Simon into having sex with her, despite him having previously communicated that he did not want children and twice told her to stop.

Stunned fans took to social media to express their horror at spousal rape being used as a plot device.

"This is just another reminder and psa, that #bridgerton has an onscreen rape scene of a black man," wrote one viewer.

Another wrote: "The consent conversation about THAT #Bridgerton sex scene is especially important because it illustrates how consensual sex can switch from an enjoyable act to rape in a matter of seconds."

Journalist Sabah Malik also wrote: "I am really really sickened at how they completely brushed past a pretty shocking rape scene. Marital r*pe, forced sex - and then boom we just move on the next day."

"Super disappointing, the show was already kind of tough to watch."

Netflix was approached for comment by The Mirror at the time.
