A TikTok user is writing songs for a musical based on Bridgerton.
Based on Julia Quinn’s series of historical romance novels, Bridgerton has been a huge hit for Netflix since it dropped on Christmas Day, having been watched by 63 million households in its first three weeks alone.
Now, singer and TikTokker Abigail Barlow, is imagining what a musical theatre production, including original songs based on the show, would sound like.
Other users can then add their own verses to the songs using the app’s Duet feature.
On Monday (11 January), Barlow shared her first video in the series, asking the camera: “Ok, but what if Bridgerton was a musical?”
The first song is sung by Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and takes place after she is left by love interest Simon (Regé Jean Page).
“I can’t even drink champagne without seeing your face,” she sings. “Am I the one to blame? / When we’re dancing in the same room / But you’re an ocean away.”
The same song is later reprised from the Duke’s perspective, with another song titled “Burn for You” sung as a duet between Daphne and Simon on their honeymoon.
Barlow has also branched out into covering other characters in the franchise, writing one song from the perspective of Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) as she pines for Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).
“Never as thin, never as perfect / Never for him, never deserving of the boy I love,” Barlow’s song goes. “So I keep it all in / It’s like I’m invisible in my own skin / Give up on the fictional fairy tale end / You’re not Cinderella, you’re just Penelope Featherington.”
Updating fans on Tuesday (12 January), Barlow said that she hoped to turn the Bridgerton musical into a full-length project or concept album.
The Bridgerton musical isn’t the first original theatre project to emerge from TikTok, with users last year coming together to write songs for a show based on the Pixar film Ratatouille.
It was staged on New Year’s Day as a benefit concert starring Tituss Burgess and Adam Lambert.
