Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh breaks silence after 'terribly white' Coronation comments spark online backlash

Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh has addressed a 'backlash' after comments she made about the Royal Family on the balcony during King Charles' Coronation on Saturday.

The actress has said that she "didn't mean to upset anyone" when she said she felt the scene at Buckingham Palace following the Westminster crowning was "terribly white".

Adjoa, who plays Lady Danbury in the Netflix series, had been appearing during the ITV live coverage of the coronation when she revealed her thoughts.

The star, 60, had spoken out at the moment that the new King and Queen were joined on the balcony by other members of the family including the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and their children, as writes the Mirror.

"We have gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony," she told presenters Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham.

"I am very struck by that," she added.

"I am also looking at those younger generations and thinking: 'What are the nuances that they will inhabit when they grow?'"

Addressing the resulting backlash, she told BBC Radio 4's Paddy O'Connell yesterday: "'I think I upset a few people yesterday.

"I was talking about the day and how marvellous it was and then looking at the balcony at the end and suddenly going: 'Oh it's so white!' because the day had been so mixed and I didn't mean to upset anybody."

The former Casualty actress, who has Ghanian heritage, was supported by some fans who highlighted a "lack of critical thinking" from those who had taken offence at her comments.

But some right-wing commentators and royal fans were not happy with the comments.

Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, a regular commentator on Good Morning Britain, backed Adjoa's comments, telling her followers: "#AdjoaAndoh told no lies in factual observation of ‘terribly White’ (literal & symbolic) Buckingham palace balcony at #Coronation in contrast to tokenism of race diversity at Westminster Abbey & got branded ‘racist’

"White people false equivalence of racism is laughable."

She added: "For me it’s the lack of critical thinking re why the contrast is terrible as she rightly points out.

"Even if Adjoa Andoh spent 99.99% on TV adulating King Charles & British Monarchy, that one observation of White Balcony erases it because for racists she doesn’t know her place."

One of the negative tweets, from an account called 'End Wokeness', reads: "Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh calls the British royal family 'terribly white'

"Imagine someone talking like this on live TV about any other race."

"'I think I upset a few people yesterday," Adjoa told Paddy O'Connell on BBC Radio 4 this morning.

"I was talking about the day and how marvellous it was and then looking at the balcony at the end and suddenly going: 'Oh it's so white!' because the day had been so mixed and I didn't mean to upset anybody."
