Bridgerton smashes Netflix record as more than 80m fans stream raunchy period drama

Bridgerton has smashed Netflix records as the steamy period drama raked in an incredible 82million views from fans all over the world.

The popular TV series made its debut on the streaming giant on Christmas Day and it was predicted to project 63millions views within the first month of its release.

But the flirty show, featuring the likes of actress Phoebe Dynevor and hunky actor Rege-Jean Page, has gone above and beyond, with the 1800s Regency London drama bringing in more than 80million viewers.

The cast of the series were left blown away by the response and shared their excitement on Instagram.

Phoebe Dynevor shared: "This is utterly insane. I'm SO proud of the incredible team behind this show! And thank you guys for loving it. MADNESS.."

While her co-star Rege-Jean Page wrote: "8 2 M I L L I O N. With love. From all of us. To all of you."

Jinny Howe, vice president of original series at Netflix, said Bridgerton has "shown that romance can be smart, dynamic, bold and yes – universally appealing".

"Bridgerton, like The Queen's Gambit, defies tradition, and demonstrates that period dramas are not limited in scope or audience.

"The show is a fictional portrayal of London in 1813 that lifts that facade of Regency life.

"It's designed to be more lavish, sexier and funnier than the standard period drama – and that's what so surprised and delighted our members."

According to Netflix, Bridgerton has entered the top 10 in the popularity rankings in every country except Japan, while it has hit number one in 83 countries including the UK.

Fans can expect to see season two of the series at some point after the success of the first season.

Filming for the second series will begin in the spring, at various locations across the UK.
