Bridgerton will return for a second season, Netflix has confirmed.
Based on Julia Quinn’s series of historical romance novels, Bridgerton has been a huge hit for the streaming service since it dropped on Christmas Day, being watched by 63 million households in its first three weeks alone.
Fans had suspected that a second season of the show was on its way, with Netflix finally confirming the news on Friday (21 January).
The announcement was made in a copy of “Lady Whistledown’s society papers”, which reads: “The ton are abuzz with the latest gossip, and so it is my honour to impart to you: Bridgerton shall officially return for a second season. I do hope you have stored a bottle of ratafia for this most delightful occasion.”
Actor Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington in the series, also celebrated the news, tweeting: “Dearest Viewers, this author is proud to announce #Bridgerton Season Two, expect much scandal indeed.”
Production on season two will begin this spring.
While the first season of Bridgerton centres around Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and her romance with the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), season two will focus instead on her older brother Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) as he looks for a wife.
In Quinn’s book series, each novel focuses on a different child from the Bridgerton family, with showrunner Chris Van Dusen previously saying he would ideally like the show to run for eight seasons: one for each book.
