Bridgerton boss says fans aren't 'ready' for season 2 as he gives update on Netflix show

Bridgerton quickly became a fan favourite when the first series dropped on Netflix last year.

Fans were hooked by the romance between Simon Bassett, Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) and Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and the scandals surrounding the group, brought on by newsletter columnist Lady Whistledown.

And those who are looking forward to the next series of the show will be even more excited after creator Chris Van Dusen teased what fans can expect from the new series, as he has already started editing the first two episodes.

Giving fans an update, he told Deadline : "I don’t think people are going to be ready.

"It’s everything people love so much about the first season but more."

And Chris admits he could "never" have anticipated how well the show would have gone down with viewers.

"I always hoped that people would find and fall in love with this show but I certainly could never have anticipated this level of response or reception and it’s been so exciting and a little surreal in the best way possible," he said.

"I'm just filled with so much gratitude."

Fans were devastated when they found out Regé-Jean would not be returning as the handsome Duke, but Phoebe revealed she had "a bit of a heads up" as she admitted his exit was a "spanner".

The new series will see the focus shifted onto Jonathan Bailey, who stars as Anthony Bridgerton (Netflix)

During an appearance on Variety's Awards Circuit podcast, she said: "I had a bit of a heads up so I knew but yeah, I guess it is a spanner. But again, the show centres around the Bridgertons and there are eight books."

"'I think maybe the fans of the books were more aware of that happening than the fans of the show," she added.

"I think fans of the books know that every episode is about a different sibling. And we’re very much passing the baton to the lovely Johnny, who plays Anthony.

“Obviously it’s sad to see [Regé-Jean] go but I’m looking forward to being reunited with my family."

Netflix have confirmed Bridgerton will return with a third and fourth series aswell.

Producer Shonda Rhimes said: "From the first time I read Julia Quinn's delicious Bridgerton series, I knew these were stories that would captivate a viewing audience.

"But the evolution of this adaptation would not be a success without the many significant contributions of the entire Shondaland team."
