Bridgend council's Plaid group appoint new leader

The Plaid group on Bridgend County Borough Council has appointed a new leader.

Councillor Tim Thomas takes over the role from Cllr Malcolm James who had held the position since May 2017.

Cllr Thomas, the ward councillor for Ynysawdre, said: “Malcolm has been a stalwart for us for many years and things have moved on under his leadership.

“We now have the most councillors we have ever had, we’ve had a massive increase in membership and our election results have really improved.

“Malcolm is quite a senior member of the team and we are looking for more sustainable leadership going forward.”

The Plaid group has four councillors on the local authority.

Cllr Thomas said the group’s priorities involved trying to protect education and schools, increasing Welsh-medium provision and improving opportunities for children with additional learning needs.

He said: “We are going to scrutinise the Local Development Plan carefully to ensure any development is sustainable and meets the needs of local people, and that includes transport, infrastructure and services.

“We also want to look at ensuring our communities have first class primary care provision.”
