Bridge Street closed: Residents may be evacuated after gas pipe damaged in Penicuik car crash

Residents may be evacuated after a car crashed through a garden wall and damaged a gas pipe in Penicuik.

Police were called to Bridge Street at around 1pm on Saturday following reports of an accident.

Midlothian police posted on social media that the road had been closed from High Street to Peebles Road, with motorists urged to take an alternative route. There are not thought to be any injuries.

Officers remain at the scene, and may be forced to evacuate those living in the area as a precaution.

A police spokesperson said: "Police Scotland received a report that a car had gone into a garden wall at Bridge Street, Penicuik at 1pm today (Saturday 23 May).

"It appears the driver is unhurt. A gas pipe has been damaged and residents may have to be evacuated as a precaution."

The road remains closed and we'll bring you more on this as we get it.
