Bridge of Allan 20mph speed limits imposed on town streets in safety bid

Twenty miles per hour speed limits with signs have been going up in Bridge of Allan this week.

Town roads with the new restrictions include Keir Street and Fountain Road.

It is also hoped that a 20mph limit will be implemented on Henderson Street in the months to come, as residents have had long-standing concerns about the speed of traffic on the town’s main thoroughfare.

The latest 20mph limits are part of the Sustrans-Scottish Government Spaces for People project.

Town councillors Alasdair Tollemache and Douglas Dodds, who have been calling for 20mph speed reductions, both welcomed the move.

And Keir Street resident Victoria Anderson said: “Speeding in Bridge of Allan is a real problem, especially in areas such as Henderson Street, but also in Keir Street where I live.

“The village is used as a short cut and because Keir Street runs parallel to Henderson Street it is also used as a short cut.

“The street is wide and straight and this encourages most drivers to speed.

“More needs to be done by Stirling Council and the community council and councillors are working very hard to achieve this. Hopefully these 20mph limits are the just the start and it will continue.”

Councillor Tollemache said: “The council is looking at measures that will reduce the speed on Henderson Street – and I would ask for the extension of 20mph to go beyond Pullar Memorial Park.

“I also feel that Cornton Road should be 20mph as well, as residents have told me they would feel safer with this reduction.

Councillor Dodds added that the 20mph restrictions were “a positive step” but stressed that enforcement of speed limits was also needed.

He added: “Further discussions are ongoing with council officers to reduce speeding along Henderson Street. Hopefully by the spring these measures will be in place.”

A Stirling Council spokesperson said: “Twenty mph speed limits are being introduced in parts of Bridge of Allan in consultation with communities as part of the Council’s drive to make areas safer and to encourage walking, cycling and promote an active lifestyle.”
