Bridge in Sandiacre badly damaged by van fire finally reopens

A bridge that was badly damaged after an arson attack on a van took place underneath it has finally reopened.

The bridge was deemed structurally unsafe after the fire in the early hours of June 10 caused serious damage.

Derbyshire County Council closed Longmoor Lane so that repairs could be completed to make the bridge safe to use.

The bridge was filled in by bricks being placed either side, before concrete was poured on to ensure strength.

A new footpath has also been constructed over the bridge and a new bus shelter will be installed.

The council also took the opportunity to resurface areas of Longmoor Lane while road closures were in place.

But the lengthy closures of the bridge and the 'access only' order on Sandringham Road, which was a separate closure, caused despair for The Bridge pub as owners said the establishment was 'cut off' from the public.

Works are now complete and the bridge opened to traffic today (August 30).

Councillor Simon Spencer, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways, transport and infrastructure, said: "We had no option to close Longmoor Lane while we fixed the bridge and appreciate this has caused weeks of inconvenience for motorists and pedestrians. Thanks to everyone for their patience.

"We have pulled out all the stops to work as quickly as possible with support from the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Trust which fast-tracked us permission to work on their land.

"While the road closure was in place we also used this opportunity to bring forward planned resurfacing work minimising disruption in the future by preventing further road closures."
