Bridge had to be "millimetre perfect" for installation

PRECISION: The installation in Newcastle had to be "millimetre perfect".

THE company responsible for the installation of a 40 tonne bridge in Newcastle said it "went like a dream".

JC Butko Engineering personnel joined the team that put the shared cyclist/pedestrian crossing in place overnight on Saturday as part of Transport for NSW's Newcastle Inner City Bypass Project. The 34 metre structure had been manufactured in Wodonga and transported north last week.

Senior project manager Shane Giddens said the road had been shut about 9pm, the bridge was "basically in" at 2am and the JC Butko Engineering workers had left the site by 4am.

"A lift like that generally goes fairly quick, it's the planning that takes the longest period of time," he said.

PRECISION JOB: Lifting the 40 tonne bridge onto its piers was an overnight operation that had to be millimetre perfect.

Borger Cranes supplied the 400 tonne crane that lifted the bridge onto its piers.

"It had to be millimetre perfect so it was a big relief," Mr Giddens said.

"With all the planning that you do, it's always pleasing when something like that drops directly into position."
