Bridge closure, roadworks and torrential rain hit Sandiacre pub The Bridge - and now there's a power cut

A Sandiacre pub is suffering a loss of trade after the triple whammy of a bridge closure, roadworks and heavy rain.

Part of Longmoor Lane remains closed today after a van fire near the bridge. Structural engineers are currently on the scene.

Natalie Russell, manager of The Bridge pub, said business was already down due to the roadworks on Bostocks Lane.

Now the Longmoor Lane closure, plus the bad weather, has had "a massive negative impact on takings" with customers from Long Eaton cut off.

Miss Russell said: "It was really really quiet yesterday. We had a wake in the function room and it's thanks to them that the pub stayed open as long as it did.

"I took over in November 2017 and it's never been like this. To be as quiet as this is concerning.

"We get a lot of trade from the hotels (near the motorway) in the evenings, usually. We closed the kitchen two hours early and the pub closed at 9.30pm. Longmoor Lane is still closed as they're waiting for an engineer to check that the bridge is structurally sound as (the fire) caused severe damage."

To make matters worse the pub suffered a power cut this morning.

"Half the pub is affected. They are working on it now. Could today get any worse?" added Miss Russell.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire County Council said: "The safety of road users has to be our priority in this case but we're working to get the road open as quickly as possible.

"Engineers are currently carrying out structural tests and assessments on the fire-damaged bridge and drivers are urged to follow the diversions in place while the B6002 Longmoor Road/Longmoor Lane remains closed.

"Traffic controls remain in place around the ongoing roadworks at Bostocks Lane and we’re working as fast as we can to assess the structural safety of the bridge.

"The emergency closure will remain in place until we’re satisfied there is absolutely no risk to road users but meanwhile we apologise for any inconvenience and thank people for their patience and support while we carry out this essential emergency work."
