Brides-to-be to march on Government buildings in dresses in bid to boost attendances

Around 200 brides-to-be will march on Government buildings in their dresses attempting to increase wedding capacities.

The brides will carry drafted guidelines explaining how weddings could be increased to 100 guests from August.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said yesterday that brides and grooms should play it safe and plan for just 50 guests going forward.

The bridal march is being organised by Wedding International Professionals Association (WIPA), which says the recommendations will enable weddings of 100 people to go ahead in a manner that is safe for both staff and guests.

They claim the guidelines, drafted in conjunction with health experts, will include recommendations for photographers, venues, hotels, marquees, floor plans and transport providers.

"We need to provide certainty for couples and the industry as to what is happening in August," said WIPA President Tara Fay.

"We have developed our comprehensive health and safety guidelines to show that it can be done safely.

"Our guidelines go far beyond the Government recommendations in order to kickstart the wedding sector in Ireland.

"The Government previously announced that weddings from August onwards will be able to have 100 people in attendance, but they are now backtracking on this.’’

‘’We want to engage with the Government on this, get our industry back on its feet and provide certainty for couples who are extremely stressed and anxious. There are thousands of people in this country whose livelihoods utterly depend on weddings and they need to know if they are going to have a job come September.’’
