Bride-to-be slams size of her engagement ring - causing divided opinions online

A bride-to-be has slammed her own engagement ring given to her by her partner of eight years - and it's caused quite a stir online.

The woman has questioned her ungratefulness online - and asked if she is being 'shady or materialistic'.

The newly engaged woman shared a photo of the thin gold band with the small diamond online and wrote: "We been togetha for 8 years & talkin bout gettin married for almost 3. dis da ring he said he saved up to buy me. Am i being shady or materialistic if i tell dis mf ion want dis little ring?"

Her snap was then shared to a wedding shaming reddit page where a user popped the question: "Is this lady justified in that she doesn’t want the ring? Would you accept it?"

Reddit readers flocked to comment on the photo with a number of comments out of nearly 300 questioning the future husband's 'saving' abilities.

One upvoted comment on the top of the page said: "I'd just exchange it for a ring I like. Preferably a cheaper stone that you can see with the naked eye."

The image was shared to a reddit wedding shaming page to start the debate (reddit.com/weddingshaming)

Another top comment said: "He 'saved up' for two weeks. 1 pay period. Instead of spending on something frivolous, he paid his bills and bought that with what was left. That's gotta be what this is."

The thread got Brits talking after Good Morning Britain presenters Richard Madeley and Charlotte Hawkins got talking about how much the size of a diamond in an engagement ring matters.

One Good Morning Britain follower replied: "Only materialistic women will say yes! It shouldn’t matter about the size or cost of a ring... surely all that should matter is LOVE."

Another shared their own experience: "I got my wife's engagement ring from those machines you see outside shops, £1 in and you get an egg. Well we are still married after 11 yrs."

A popular tweet with 153 likes in reply to GMB's post said: "We got engaged when I was 19. I'd just finished a year voluntary work. The engagement ring had a very small diamond, it cost £35 which I paid for with a tax rebate. What matters is we're still together 42 years later."

But some users hit back saying it was 'ugly' with one even posting: "Is she certain it's a diamond? Looks more like a sugar granule."

Another told GMB viewers to 'be honest' and reminded those that it's to be worn 'for life' - with reference to a Friends gif when Joey gave Chandler a garish, gold bracelet.

Would you be happy with this engagement ring?
