Bride-to-be's mum 'disgusted' by £15 engagement ring and says it 'doesn't count'

When it comes to engagement rings, everyone wants something different.

For some people, their ideal ring is a sparkly thing from Tiffany's, others don't care about the appearance, only the commitment they're making.

One woman recently revealed that she was over the moon when her partner popped the question - but her mother wasn't quite so impressed with the cheap ring he gave her.

In a post on parenting forum Mumsnet, the unnamed woman revealed all, and people were divided over the situation.

The woman began by saying that her boyfriend of three years asked her to marry him that very morning.

He got down on one knee and presented her with a ring she'd pointed out in a store window a few months back - it cost £15.

The woman wasn't bothered about the price as she knew they didn't have much money, but her mum was outraged.

She explained: "We don't have a lot of money and I've always said I'm not bothered about having an expensive ring as it's not the ring that matters to me, it's the commitment of marriage for our future.

But her mum wasn't as impressed (stock photo) (Getty)

Man proposes to girlfriend with £7,000 ring he borrowed from stranger - which she then has to give back

"So I was just as happy when he asked me as I would have been with an expensive ring. But when I rang my mum to tell her she was shocked and disgusted that my partner hadn't spent more money on the ring and said it basically doesn't count as an engagement."

She added: "I'm not really into wearing jewellery and am not materialistic so the actual ring has never been a big deal to me. Is this just me?"

More than 200 people responded to her post, with many congratulating her on the engagement and some discussing their own cheap engagement rings - including Haribo sweets.

One wrote: "Ignore your mum, congratulations!"

Another commented: "She's being daft, you don't need a ring at all for an engagement, let alone an expensive one!"

A third added: "Nope, not just you. I'm divorced now and happily unmarried, but I think my engagement ring wasn't fancy, it was one I'd chosen because of the stones. It was about £60 I think.

"Anyway, you're happy, he's happy, congratulations! Pay no heed to what anyone else thinks."

However some people were in agreement with her mother.

Someone else said: "£15 really is very miserly! Wtf."

A second thought it was an issue as it probably meant that it was made from cheap materials that wouldn't last.

Another said they didn't think her partner should have bothered with a ring at all if it was going to be "very cheap".
