Bride's parents brand her 'selfish' for not spending £4,000 on wedding ceremony

Weddings come in so many different shapes and sizes, and while one couple might want a lavish ceremony at an expensive venue, others are much happier visiting a registry office by themselves with no guests in sight.

But one woman has been accused of being "selfish" and "taking the joy away" from her parents after she told them she and her fiancé are not planning on holding any sort of wedding ceremony when they get married.

The bride-to-be, from the US, explained she and her partner "can't afford" to host a wedding so are instead going to the Justice of the Peace (JP) to sign off on the legal paperwork and calling it a day.

However, when she told her parents about the plan, they were furious - and demanded she fork out an estimated $5,000 (£3,976) to host a full wedding ceremony.

In a post on Reddit, she said: "My fiancé and I don't wanna have a ceremony as we can not afford it. I have spoken to my parents and informed them that my fiancé and I are gonna go to the JP and get married due to it being the cheaper route.

"Well, when I informed both my parents they started to make it all about them as I expected … but I wanted them to know the plans so if they wanted to come with they could.

"My mum called me selfish for taking the joy away from my father of being able to walk his daughter down the aisle and the joy from her of being able to be there during the getting ready process the part that I'm guessing a mother loves the most.

"My fiancé and I both did the math for even a small ceremony it would cost roughly around $5,000 not including the dresses and tux for the wedding parties."

The woman added that her parents were "both very bad parents" when she was growing up, as she "never saw eye to eye" with her mum, and her dad initially walked out on the family when she was young, before returning when she was 14.

She also explained that her parents aren't prepared to help her financially with the wedding, so she'd need to spend the colossal amount herself - just to hold the wedding they want her to have.

"I finally had enough of hearing both my parents' bulls**t and told them if they wanted me to have one so bad, they need to pay for it or shut the f**k up," she added, "which has now made me even more of a bad guy as I shouldn't make my family pay for something that isn't a day about them."

Commenters on the post were firmly on the bride's side, with many of them telling her to simply go and get married and tell her parents afterwards when it's already done.

One person said: "They will ruin your small day. Don't talk to them until you are already married."

While another added: "You've made it known a wedding is not in your budget. If they insist on a wedding they should foot the whole bill for the event including your dress. Stand your ground and don't incur the debt."

And a third wrote: "You and your fiancé are doing the responsible thing by marrying within your means. You should be congratulated for having the good sense not to spend money you don't have. More engaged couples should follow your lead."
