Bride outraged as bridesmaid orders lavish custom-made gown without permission

When it comes to planning your wedding, organising the colour scheme and the style of dress you want your bridesmaids to wear can be overwhelming - which is exactly why you often have a maid of honour on hand to help you choose.

But one bride is outraged at one of her bridesmaids who keeps "arguing" with her about the dress she wants to wear, as although the bride has set out her expectations for the bridesmaid dresses, they're not good enough for this one party member.

Instead, the bridesmaid in question wants to wear a custom-made evening gown to the event - which is being held in a barn - and has even gone behind the bride's back to order one.

The dress the bridesmaid planned on wearing (Reddit)

In a post on Reddit, the bride shared a picture of a long flowing emerald dress with beaded detail on the shoulders and waist, and a high slit up one leg, which she said was the dress her bridesmaid wants to wear.

She wrote alongside the picture: "One of my bridesmaids has been arguing with me for months about the dress she wants to wear. We've been through hundreds of options.

"I am getting married in a barn and she wants to wear an evening gown. She informed me this weekend she was getting this dress custom-made for her in the wedding colours with no slit and no beading. The last dress I suggested her mum vetoed because 'she didn't like it'.

"How do I tackle this?!?"

Commenters on the post were quick to tell the bride that she should be firm with her friend, and tell her that if she doesn't "stop trying to make this wedding all about her" then she'll no longer be a bridesmaid.

One person said: "You tell her she can't be a bridesmaid if she can't put on her big girl panties and stop trying to make this wedding be about her. If she throws a fit, she's out of the wedding and uninvited."

While another added: "Tell her to pick from the approved dresses or she can't be in the wedding. If you've been at this for months and this is what she suggested she might not want to really be in it anyway."

And a third wrote: "This dress only screams trying to upstage the bride. At some point, you have to be blunt and honest. If you don't like what I approve, you cannot be a bridesmaid."

In an update, the bride later said there had been a miscommunication between herself and the bridesmaid, and it was clarified that the bridesmaid was actually ordering a custom version of the dress the bride had approved, as the original version didn't fit her.

The pair have since talked things through and cleared up their misunderstanding, and the bride's friend will continue to support her on her big day.

She said: "She did end up ordering a custom dress, and did not communicate well that she was actually getting the dress I picked out initially custom-made for her in the colour I approved for her.

"Thank you all for your replies, because you really gave me the courage to reach out to her. I'm really glad I didn't just go straight to booting her out, and I'm happy that she did come down to earth and will be there to support me on one of the best days.

"I think mainly this was a great reminder to myself to make sure all communication is ultra clear and to show everyone else the grace I'd like to be shown myself. I feel so much better about all of this. Hope you all have a wonderful day!"
