Bride left flummoxed as mum demands she chop off her curly hair before wedding

When it comes to your wedding day, many brides will likely have an idea of exactly how they want their hair and makeup to look, especially when it comes to matching the colour scheme to the dress they've picked out.

And while everyone has different tastes, it's ultimately up to the bride to decide how she wants to look.

But one bride-to-be on Reddit has discovered her mum has a lot to say about the way she wants her daughter to style her hair on her big day - as she's demanded the woman cut her long curly hair because she "hates" it.

Sharing her story anonymously, the woman explained her younger sister suffers from alopecia and that has encouraged her to grow out her own hair as much as possible so that she can have it cut and donate it to charities that make wigs for children every few years.

And while she plans to donate her hair this year, she wants to wait until after her wedding in September - which has caused arguments within her family.

She said: "I have long, thick curly hair. My younger sister has alopecia, and over the years has lost most of her hair. Growing up, it always killed me that I could grow hair so easily and she couldn't, and I saw the toll it took on her emotionally. Just imagine going through puberty with little to no hair.

"So ever since I was a teenager I've been growing it out and donating it to a charity that makes wigs for children. I usually do it every couple of years, on my birthday in May.

"Recently, I've gotten engaged, and we've decided to get married in September. Since I wanted to donate this year anyway, I decided to wait until after the wedding - I figured that I could donate more and there are less donations of curly hair anyway so it just made sense."

The woman said her mum is determined to get her to chop off her hair before her wedding, and has gone "radio silent" on her since she refused to do so.

She added: "My mum was not pleased when I told her. She's never been a huge fan of my curls as she says they're too frizzy, unruly, and messy. She hates that I refuse to cut, dye or straighten my hair because I want to keep it as healthy as possible.

"A couple of days ago she told me over the phone that I would 'have to come to terms with the fact that you'll have to cut off your hair' and I got really upset. I told her that I'm a grown woman, it's my head, it's my wedding and I'll be doing what I want.

"The conversation awkwardly petered out and It's been radio silence from her ever since. We usually talk or text every day, so I know she's upset, and now I'm thinking I should have just agreed and waited a few months to see if things calmed down."

Commenters on the Reddit post were largely on the woman's side, as many of them couldn't understand why her mum would have any issue with her hair.

One person said: "That's one the weirdest demands I've read about weddings or hair for that matter. Who cares if you have long hair at your wedding?"

While another added: "It's your body. Not only do you always have a right to say no, but your mother is also just horrific for saying any of this. Enjoy your hair at your wedding. With or without your mom if she can't accept that."
