Bride expects pal to cater wedding for free to get 'exposure' - but it backfires

A woman has refused to cater for her friend's wedding for free and is insulted by the idea that she should do it to get 'exposure'.

Her friend's wedding is coming up and she was asked to be the caterer for the big day free of cost as the bride said this could be her gift to her.

While the woman was honoured to be asked, she refused the request as she just wanted to enjoy her friend's big day and said if she was catering she would hardly be around.

In the Reddit post, she said she would rather get the friend an actual gift.

The woman, who remained anonymous, wrote: "I told her I was honoured that she thought I was a good enough cook, but if I provided catering, I wouldn't be able to really enjoy the wedding as a guest and I hadn't really been planning on working all day for my friend's wedding.

"She told me that providing the catering could be my wedding gift instead of an actual gift. I explained that if I was catering the wedding (it's 40/50 people so small for a wedding, but still obviously a lot of cooking and prep) that I couldn't attend it because I'd be making Hors D'oeuvre during the day and ceremony and dinner during the reception."

She told her friend if she wanted her to cater she should actually pay for the service as if she did not attend the wedding the bride was not owed an expensive gift.

The woman added: "She is now mad at me because she was trying to help boost my catering by giving me some exposure (again, this is not my main source of income and I'm not looking for new clients).

"I feel bad that she is mad at me but I just don't see why I should cater meals and appetisers for free for her just because I am a good cook! It would be extremely expensive and super time consuming for me."

In response, many have sided with her and said her friend was just trying to get the service for free.

One person wrote: "People offering "exposure" are really looking for a free service."

Another stated: "I for one wouldn't do it even if she paid because she seems the kind of person to complain for years after because I didn't do it the way she wanted."

A third penned: "She wasn't trying to boost your business, she was trying to cut one of the more expensive costs from her wedding budget."
