Bricks and firebombs thrown at family home in Kenton in New Year's Eve attack

This is the state a family home was left in after a New Year's Eve firebomb attack.

Police are today probing the incident in which bricks and 'firebombs' were thrown at the house, in Kenton , during the last hour of 2019.

Today the property, on Kinross Drive, remains boarded-up while a shed outside stands broken and charred.

Ground-floor windows at both the front and back of the terraced house appear to have been smashed, while Santa-themed Christmas decorations can be seen in the upstairs windows.

Neighbours told ChronicleLive that the family who lived there have not returned.

And police say they believed the incident was a 'targeted' attack.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "At 11.14 pm on New Year’s Eve we were called to an address at Kinross Drive following reports of three youths throwing bricks and fire bombs.

“CCTV of the incident is being reviewed to help identify the youths.

“At present the incident is being treated as targeted and the occupants of the property have moved out.”

People who were on the street, on New Year's Eve, said they saw the police arrive, but did not see the attack.

John Mitchell, from West Denton , was visiting a home directly opposite on December 31.

The 70-year-old said: "We were up until midnight, but we didn't see the damage until the next morning. We saw the shed had been broken into, I asked the people over the road what had happened but they didn't seem to know much about it."

Another neighbour added: "I don't know what's happened but there were a lot of police here. They were here all over the night."
