Briane Gaine believes Texans can find starters in Rounds 2-3

Houston Texans general manager Brian Gaine has kept his card close to the vest for some time now, revealing very little about their overall draft strategy and targets. While this may not necessarily be a surprise given the overall nature of the draft, his comments after round one do somewhat hint to what positions they may target in rounds two and three on Friday.

The Texans addressed offensive tackle with Tytus Howard at 23rd overall. Now, they have to find quality defensive backs and edge defenders on day two of the 2019 NFL draft.

“I think this is a great opportunity for the team tomorrow, here on [day two], to get not two, but three good players — three contributing players,” Gaine said. “Just looking at our board right now, it looks very favorable for us in terms of spots 54 and 55 to get some impactful contributors, not just at the positions you mentioned. I think across the board right now, we’re positioned very well to get two good players at 54 and 55, and 86 is very favorable for us as well.”

Gaine is clearly confident in their draft board and optimistic that starting caliber talent is still very much available. He has said previously that he aimed to get four eventual starters within the top-100 picks in the draft, and with the way that the cornerbacks, offensive linemen, and wide receivers, in particular, have all fallen so far, these positions of need for the Texans could be about to get the reinforcements they so desperately need.
