Brian Wilson postpones tour, says ‘he’s struggling with stuff in my head’

Brian Wilson performs in Los Angeles in 2017.

Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson has postponed his June tour, including an appearance in Aurora, to focus on treating his mental illness.

In a candid statement on his website, the musician said he began feeling strange after a series of successful back surgeries.

“It’s been pretty scary for awhile,” he write. “I was not feeling like myself. Mentally insecure is how I’d describe it. We’re not sure what is causing it but I do know that it’s not good for me to be on the road right now so I’m heading back to Los Angeles.”

He said he had been rehearsing with his band and was excited to get back to performing, but then he began “struggling with stuff in my head and saying things I don’t mean and I don’t know why.”

Wilson had been scheduled to sing June 23 at RiverEdge Park in Aurora. No replacement date was announced, and a note to buyers said ticket costs will be refunded.

After suffering a nervous breakdown during the Beach Boys’ heyday in 1964, Wilson fell victim to mental illness and substance abuse in a well-documented struggle that continued well into the ’70s and ’80s. Over the last two decades he has been in better health and active in recording and touring.
