Brian Wilson makes Celtic transfers promise as chairman previews window

Brian Wilson has admitted he expects Celtic to have a very busy summer transfer window.

It will not come as a surprise to fans or onlookers who have been expecting as much after some sub-standard displays last season, a lot of loan players having ended their time at the club and more departures likely to follow.

Reinforcements will be required after Celtic spent much of last season playing catch-up before eventually winning a double that had previously seemed unlikely.

In a question around whether Martin O'Neill will be backed in the transfer market ahead of the new season, interim chairman Wilson told Celtic TV: “Absolutely, and that is very much part of the basis on which he’s wanted to come back, and we’ve wanted him to come back.

“It’s going to be a very active next few weeks, and we must come out of it with a stronger squad.

“It’s worth mentioning maybe for all the criticisms last year, that eight of our players are at the World Cup.

“We have a lot of very, very good players, so we want to not only retain that strength, but also to build on it.”

On his delight at O'Neill staying on, he added: “I think, like every supporter in their heart of hearts, I’m really pleased that Martin’s going to continue the journey.

“It’s the outcome we wanted, it’s the outcome we’ve got, and just building on the success of last year, the inspiration he gave, the leadership he gave, and then to have a full season ahead to bring all that to another level.

“It’s really exciting for supporters and a very well-earned tribute to Martin that we wanted him and he wanted to come back to continue that journey. So we’re absolutely delighted.”
