Brian Schottenheimer wants to see backup J.T. Barrett get game time

The Seattle Seahawks signed another backup quarterback to the roster last Saturday as a little insurance with Geno Smith on the mend after having a cyst removed from his knee.

Seattle added former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett to assist Paxton Lynch over the next 10 days, or so, while Smith is out.

Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer would love to see what Barrett can actually do on the field.

“I’ll say this about J.T., he has picked up the offense maybe as fast as anybody,” Schottenheimer said Tuesday. “Tremendous, tremendous worker, we’re 10-11 installs in, and I don’t think that there’s not a play that he can at least begin to draw up. We do that a lot in the quarterback room, a little 30 minute deal we’ve got. We’ll call a play and they’ll all go draw it, and he’s right there with the other three.”

Starter Russell Wilson sat out last Thursday’s competition while Smith and Lynch took all the reps against the Broncos. Wilson will likely get in a few series this week in Minnesota and Lynch and Barrett could battle for the remaining time on the field.

“He doesn’t maybe always win but he draws it correctly,” Schottenheimer continued. “As a quarterback, you need to be able to picture the play from the life in your mind, otherwise how do you go out and execute your read? He’s done an amazing job of picking it up so yes, we’d love to get him some work if we could.”
