Brian Moore says 'time is up' for Warren Gatland and urges the Lions to move on

Brian Moore thinks the Lions should move on from Warren Gatland when they head to Australia in four years' time.

After the tourists were defeated 2-1 in South Africa, the Lions hierarchy came out in support of Gatland, leaving the door open for him to take the reins the next time they travel.

But it is not an idea that has been met with widespread support.

And former hooker Moore, who has 64 caps for England and toured with the Lions twice, thinks it could be time to look at someone else.

"I think time us up," Moore said on his Full Contact podcast. "Not because I don't like the guy but why have more of the same when rugby's going to move forward.

"Give someone else a chance, a fresh perspective. It might succeed, it might not.

"But I can't see why you would want to go back with the tried and tested.

"He's been very good, but leave it there."

This was Gatland's fourth involvement with the Lions and the third consecutive trip on which he has been the head coach. He followed a series win in Australia with a drawn series against the All Blacks four years ago.

But the defeat in South Africa will harm his credentials, if he even wants the role when it becomes available in the future.

The Telegraph's chief rugby writer Gavin Mairs added: "I must admit, I was also surprised at the Lions chairman Jason Leonard and managing director Ben Calveley both coming out so quickly after the tour had finished to declare their support for Warren Gatland.

"I agree with you and I imagine Warren feels a little bit the same.

"Four years is a very long time in any professional sport. It just seems to be madness to rush out and say 'this is the man we want'.

"He gets the Lions and he's been a fantastic Lions coach but maybe it is time to look to a fresh... look to promote some of the younger up-and-coming coaches."
