Brian Little and David Bernstein have joined the Aston Villa board. The former Villa manager and the ex-Manchester City chairman have been appointed with the club rooted to the bottom of the Premier League. The chairman, Steve Hollis, who brought in the club supporter Mervyn King last month as a director, is trying to shape a more football-orientated board.

Little played at Villa Park for a decade before injuries wrecked his career. He then made a successful return as the manager between 1994 and 1998, leading them to League Cup glory in 1996 and twice achieving top-five finishes. Little has enjoyed a varied managerial career, taking charge of clubs including Wolves, West Bromwich and Leicester.

Bernstein, 72, became the Football Association chairman in 2011. Little said: “I’ve held various roles at the football club over a 46-year period and I know my experience and love for the club will help shape a positive future for Aston Villa.” Villa host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday after just three Premier League wins this season.
