As we covered yesterday, Sports Illustrated recently released a listing of 117 players who could compete for the Heisman in 2019-20. In that list, Joe Bachie was just one of eight players who could contend for the award. Based on last season, there is one ranking that could be even more surprising than Bachie, and that is Brian Lewerke being listed as a candidate to win the Heisman.
Michigan State’s starting quarterback was banged up last year and had, by far, his worst season as a Spartan. There were also a ton of injuries on the team, particularly on the offensive line, that made his life more difficult when he could play. It seems like Caleb Friedman of Sports Illustrated took this into consideration when constructing his list.
Let’s not get too amped up about this though. As I said, this is a large group of 117 candidates and Lewerke was listed in the third group of quarterbacks, being listed in the ‘Good Quarterbacks on Good or Pretty Good Teams.
