Brian Kerr slams 'disgraceful' Stephen O'Donnell over leaving St Pat's for Dundalk

Brian Kerr has blasted former St Patrick's Athletic boss Stephen O'Donnell after he left the club to join Dundalk.

The former Lilywhites captain took over as Pat's manager in August 2019 and led the club to FAI Cup glory last month, but resigned from his position less than two weeks after the shootout victory over Bohemians.

And O'Donnell was announced as Dundalk boss last week, with Saints midfielder Robbie Benson signing for the Louth club and defender John Mountney expected to follow.

And legendary former Pat's boss Kerr, who still retains strong links to the club, has blasted O'Donnell as he described his departure as a 'kick in the teeth' for the Inchicore club's fans and board.

"I think what happened is disgraceful,” Kerr said on Off The Ball.

“I was supportive of him when he went into St Pat's and the chairman and owner Garrett Kelleher gave him a chance out of the blue where he had no great background in coaching whatsoever, hadn't got the qualifications for the job and was very keen to start his managerial career at St Pat's.

"To me, loyalty is very, very important in the game, and I just think it’s disgraceful what Stephen did.

"It's not a good example to people in the game. If you're trying to bring players to a club and setting a bit of a standard but as soon as you feel like it, you decide to go. It wasn't as if Stephen O'Donnell only played for one club, he played for several other clubs, yes he had a good time at Dundalk and won trophies.

“The chairman (Kelleher) backed him totally as he has done with all of the managers that have been there in his time so it was a right kick in the teeth for anyone involved in Pat's."

He added: "Now I see one or two players drifting back with him to Dundalk, I just think it's dreadful carry-on"
