Brian Kerr says Noel Mooney should spend more time working on FAI's reputation than doing interviews

Brian Kerr reckons Noel Mooney should spend more time repairing Irish football’s battered reputation than speaking in the media.

The war of words between the former Ireland manager and the acting FAI boss escalated tonight.

Kerr was responding to Mooney’s claim on Wednesday that he would be prepared to “beg” Kerr to take up a role in Irish football.

But Mooney also accused Kerr of a lack of respect when making public a private email in August in which he asked Kerr to consider a ‘media watchdog role’ with the FAI.

Last night, Kerr said: "It's strange that Noel, the acting CEO, has so much time to do podcasts, interviews, twitterviews and throw out inaccurate comments about myself.

"I would have thought that everybody in authority within the FAI would be very busy at the moment trying to recover the reputation of the association.

“If he’s not going to be around too long (Mooney returns to UEFA next month) he should get stuck into that work.

"If and when the association has the board sorted out and they get a new CEO, at that stage if they decide that if somebody with a bit of authority wants to talk to me about a possible role..

“If they decide that they don't want to then that's their prerogative. I’ve no problem whatsoever giving some opinions and discussing any potential role in the future.

"There is an awful lot to be done to fix the game here in Ireland.”

Speaking on Virgin Media Sport, Kerr said he would be open to making a further contribution to Irish football in the future

But he said: “I don't think it's the right time now given the situation the association is in.

"It should be left at that for the moment and let people get on with their work and we get on with our jobs for now.

"And stay away from all the podcasts and interview stuff and doing stuff out in public and the media rather than just getting on with the work that needs to be done."
