Brian Flores wants team players, not star power

Go ahead and file this one away for future reference. The next time you hear someone suggest that the Dolphins really need to go out and trade for a superstar, remember that new Dolphins head coach Brian Flores seems pretty lukewarm on the idea. Flores downplayed Miami missing star power on the roster yesterday.

“It’s a team game. Stars are kind of a ‘me’ thing. I don’t — I guess I’m not — it’s a team game. There are 11 guys out there and they have to work together,” said Flores, clearly nixing himself from saying he’s not a fan of stars.

“If you have a star that wants to do his own thing, that just doesn’t work. I’m of the ‘put the team first’ mantra and these so-called ‘stars’ need to be on that page on this team. Hopefully that answers your question.”

And while at first glance, Flores’ suggestion is a little eye-opening, Miami fans can take a big breath and relax. Flores isn’t stating that he doesn’t want talent on his football team. Far from it. But Flores would very much like his football team to all be in step together — it’s part of his big “culture” push across all fronts of this organization.

Whether it falls between players, between coaches and players, coaches and management or management and ownership, Brian Flores’ vision for the Dolphins includes transparency and equal minded folks working towards a common goal.

Brian Flores wants your talent. But he also wants you to check your ego at the door — the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few in Brian Flores’ locker room.
