Brian Flores’ replacement resigns in New England

Brian Flores is apparently a tough man to replace. Just months after hiring former Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano to return to the pros and fill in for Flores, the New England Patriots are back to the drawing board. Schiano announced yesterday that he was resigning from New England, citing the need to “spend more time on my faith and family”.

The abrupt about-face certainly comes as a surprise, considering Schiano endured a three year wait to get back into coaching at any level after a disastrous two-year term as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But Schiano seems to honestly be motivated by the thing that matters most in life: family.

“I don’t want to look back years from now and wish I had done things differently. Therefore, I am taking time away from the game to recalibrate my priorities.”

Schiano, who had spent the last three seasons (2016-2018) serving as a defensive coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes, leaves the Patriots with a notable hole on their staff. Of course, Bill Belichick could easily step in to fill some of the void, considering his defensive prowess.

But the wound of losing Flores is open for the Patriots all over again thanks to Schiano’s unexpected change of heart.
