Brian Flores: “Pretty clear” Fitzpatrick leads Dolphins QB competition

This isn’t necessarily anything we didn’t already know — but now Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores has gone on the record to confirm it. Veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick continues to “lead the way” in the Dolphins’ race to name a starting quarterback for the 2019 NFL season.

Fitzpatrick took the first two days of training camp according to nearly all the reports coming out of camp, and although Josh Rosen had a better practice on Saturday, both struggled on Sunday — leaving the veteran in a position of continued control on the race.

This shouldn’t be considered a kiss of death for Josh Rosen, although the knee jerk reactions to the snippet will suggest otherwise. There’s ample time left for either quarterback to wrestle away the gig — and there’s also a chance the Dolphins will enter the 2019 regular season without a clear winner. But with Brian Flores hoping to simultaneously promote a competitive culture and get younger, there’s not an answer answer to that dilemma.

Ultimately, with the demotions of Kenyan Drake and Raekwon McMillan early on — although they’re unlikely to be permanent — Flores has promoted tough love. He wants mentally tough football players on the field at every position. This trial by fire for Rosen will either make or break him, and if he breaks, then he wasn’t the quarterback for the Miami Dolphins future anyway.
