Brian Cashman Praises Juan Soto Amid Yankees-Padres Trade Speculation

The Yankees have been linked with a potential trade for Padres superstar Juan Soto this offseason.

Recent comments from general manager Brian Cashman about San Diego’s left fielder will do little to quell the speculation regarding a possible move to New York for Soto.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Cashman was asked about Soto, and he had some significant praise for the 25-year-old.

“Obviously, he’s an impact bat. One of the best hitters in the game, and clearly a calling card from the left side, which is an area of need for us,” said Cashman, via the YES Network. “In that batter’s box he’s a difference maker. He certainly would look good in anyone’s uniform and I know the Padres are happy to have him.”

Cashman acknowledged that he couldn’t say much more given that Soto is a member of the Padres, but he indicated that the Yankees had been doing their due diligence on the trade market.

The 2024 MLB season will be Soto’s final year of arbitration, after which he’ll be eligible for free agency, where he figures to sign a mammoth contract.

With the Yankees in need of both a left-handed bat and an everyday left fielder, Soto presents a strong fit in the Bronx, something Cashman didn’t deny when addressing reporters.

With the franchise desperate to return to the playoffs and make a run at the World Series, New York is also considered a potential landing spot for Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto in free agency this offseason, who is considered one of the top pitchers on the market.
