Brian Callahan looking forward to getting John Ross going outside of red zone

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan is excited to work with wide receiver John Ross.

With the rumors about a Ross trade dismissed by Duke Tobin and Zac Taylor, the focus returns to Ross and how the team can get the most out of him on the field.

A year ago, Ross surprised by scoring seven times as one of the league’s more dangerous red zone weapons — but struggling everywhere else.

Here’s what Callahan told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com: “His production in the red zone was really interesting because you don’t look at him and think ‘red zone target.’ His speed dictates he’d be something other than that. If we get seven touchdowns out of him again, I’ll be really happy. That’s really good production in this league. As for where he fits outside the red zone, I think there’s a lot of places we can find the ball for him.”

Overall, Ross caught just 21 of his 58 targets and had a high percentage of drops to coincide with his touchdowns. He battled more nagging injuries as well and didn’t step up when given a chance to shine with guys like A.J. Green hurt, though quarterback play didn’t help.

Still, Ross getting another chance with a new coaching staff overlooking the roster is exciting for all involved, including fans. The first logical step for Callahan was finding a way to get Ross producing all over the field, not just when it shrinks.
