Brian Burns has the second-best PFF grade of any first-round pick this preseason

The Panthers may have gotten quite a steal when Brian Burns landed in their laps at No. 16 overall in this year’s draft. He has only played three preseason games so far, but Burns has exceeded all expectations. Burns has recorded four sacks in just 67 defensive snaps, he’s forced a fumble and has been effective both rushing the passer and stopping the run.

According to Pro Football Focus, Burns has a 87.0 overall grade this preseason. Only Patriots wide receiver N’Keal Harry has a higher grade at 95.2 among first-round picks. Here’s what they had to say about what Burns has done so far.

“The Panthers’ new edge defender has been one of the standout performers of the preseason so far, earning single-game grades north of 80.0 in two of his three games. He’s already recorded four sacks and one hurry from his 25 pass-rushing snaps, and his pass-rush win rate (25.0%) and his pass-rush productivity rating (12.5) both rank third among 41 qualifying first-year edge defenders.”

Burns is not listed as a starter on the team’s unofficial preseason depth chart. Instead, Bruce Irvin and Mario Addison have those roles. However, it may only be a matter of time before Burns forces himself onto the field. He looks ready not only to start, but potentially dominate as a pass rusher right away.

Burns’ first true test will come against the Rams’ offensive line in a couple weeks. Last season, they allowed just 33 sacks and 73 quarterback hits.
