Brian Baldinger: Texans’ Laremy Tunsil is the best left tackle in the NFL

The Houston Texans may have one of the best left tackles in the NFL today.

At least, that is the assertion NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger is making in his recent breakdown of Tunsil’s tape. The former offensive lineman himself knows the technique, skill, and physicality of the game all to well having been in the NFL for 11 seasons, and he can appreciate fully what Tunsil brings to Houston’s offensive line.

“Watch these sets,” Baldinger said when breaking down Tunsil’s play on a third-and-12 from the Texans’ 38-yard line with 1:07 to go until halftime in Week 5 at the Kansas City Chiefs. “These sets are just consistent. Watch the hands, the hand-to-hand combat here on [defensive end] (Emmanuel) Ogbah.

“And watch the feet just move, move shuffle and slide and stay between Ogbah and the quarterback the whole time. It doesn’t matter, for as long as needs to. He doesn’t get over-extended. He doesn’t lean. Deshaun Watson doesn’t get hit. He’ll take the scramble here for eight yards and get down and protect himself.”

Watson had one of his better games of the season as he completed 30-of-42 passing for 280 yards, a touchdown, two interceptions, and rushed 10 times for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

Though on a two-game winning streak, the Texans seemed to have turned around their fortunes after losing 16-10 to the Carolina Panthers in Week 4 in their second home game of the season. Now, the Texans are 4-2 and in first place in the AFC South.

“Laremy Tunsil is a big part of the Texans’ success,” Baldinger said.

Tunsil will have to continue his high level of play as the Texans take on the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7 at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Colts are coming off of a bye week with themselves also having beaten the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, 19-13 in Week 5.
