Brexiteers get up at 6am to put dozens of Union Jacks outside Parliament in space where EU flags normally sit

Brexiteers got up at the crack of dawn to set up dozens of Union Jacks in Parliament Square in the space where EU flags normally sit before Remain supporters arrived.

A group of four people arrived at around 6am on Thursday armed with 34 custom-made flags and found the EU flags that usually occupy the space were not present.

They seized on the opportunity and swiftly set up their flags around the television cameras outside the Houses of Parliament.

Pro-Brexit Campaigner David Ireland said: "People turn on the TV and see this entire wall covered in EU flags; some people want to be in the EU but there's also some people who don't want to be in the EU, so we've come along and done our flags.

"What the Remain voters do is shun all the Leave campaigners into the irrelevant middle ground and dominate the TV space.

"The narrative was this is the EU zone, we own this, but it seemed a little bit one-sided."

Remainers later put up their EU flags (PA)

The Remain campaigners arrived at 7.30am, and began placing their EU flags around the Union flags.

It came after MPs have rejected all eight options on a future relationship with the EU during Wednesday night’s indicative votes, as Parliament and the country remained in crisis over Brexit.

Mr Ireland, 41, admitted that work commitments meant that he would probably not be able to repeat his flag efforts.

Asked if he would do the same on Friday, he said: "I've got a job, I can't do this all the time like they do."
