Brexit: Tory Mark Francois quotes Jesus in epic midnight Biblical meltdown

A Tory suffered an utter meltdown in the Commons last night as he quoted Jesus Christ to attack MPs over Brexit .

Mark Francois - a hardline Leave backer - exploded with rage after the House of Commons passed a Bill to delay Brexit by just one vote.

MPs backed Yvette Cooper's law, forcing Theresa May to ask the EU for an extension beyond April 12, 313-312.

But speaking to jeers at almost midnight, Mr Francois said: "That does not represent the long term settled will of the House of Commons.

"There's a difference between a majority of 1.4million and one.

"The public won't be impressed by this,

"Forgive them Father - for they know not what they do!"

Brexit: MPs vote to force Theresa May to seek Article 50 extension by ONE vote

The final line is from Chapter 23 of the Gospel of Luke, and quotes Jesus begging for absolution for those who want him crucified.

MPs roared with disapproval after Mr Francois' intervention but House of Commons Speaker John Bercow said he had not broken any rules.

It is just the latest bizarre and over-the-top reaction from Mr Francois, who also said he wouldn't back the Brexit deal with a gun in his mouth, and told the Chancellor "up yours!"

It came as the Conservative Party plunged into meltdown over fears Brexit will be softened and delayed.

Theresa May is in talks with Jeremy Corbyn which many MPs believe will lead to a customs union, a softer Brexit plan.

Meanwhile EU leaders are suggesting she will need to request a much longer delay to Brexit than her plan of May 22 - despite the Cabinet being split.

Hardline Brexiteer James Duddridge last night declared "open season" on the embattled PM.

He demanded MPs hold an "indicative" vote of no confidence in Theresa May, since they can't actually oust her until 12 months since their last attempt.

Tory MPs lined up to claim her talks with Jeremy Corbyn would usher in an "anti-Semite led government".

Meanwhile pro-EU Nick Boles, who quit as a Tory after failing to enact a softer Brexit, turned on the PM's top aide, a former senior editor at the BBC.

The MP tweeted: "The PM’s head of communications Robbie Gibb is a hard Brexiter who wants to destroy the PM’s new search for a cross party compromise."

Remain-backing former Chancellor Ken Clarke today said he had "never seen a bigger shambles" as he called for a longer extension to Brexit.

Mr Clarke told Today: "I think the EU would give us an extension - they would be very angry with us - but I think the EU too would suffer if they just patched something together in the next eight days because it got fed up with our inability to make a clear consensus policy."
