Brexit: Theresa May’s live TV vow to leave by June 30 is coming back to haunt her

Theresa May had vowed that the UK would leave the EU by June 30 but was last night forced to accept an extension until 31 October - otherwise known as Halloween .

After failing to get her deal through the Commons a third time, the PM was forced to contact the EU Council President Donald Tusk to beg for an extension.

Explaining her approach to MPs on 20 March she clearly said: "As Prime Minister I am not prepared to delay Brexit any further than the 30th June".

But on Wednesday night Mrs May was forced to accept a much longer delay in another humiliating capitulation for the PM.

She said following the summit: "I have just met with Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, where I agreed an extension to the Brexit process to the end of October at the latest.

Theresa May was travelling back to the UK to explain the change to the Commons (PA)

"I continue to believe we need to leave the EU, with a deal, as soon as possible."

However there is still the chance that the UK could leave before June - if the Commons agree a deal.

EU leaders also agreed to insert a review into the process which will take place in June.

And if the UK fails to take part in the European elections then we will crash out without a deal on June 1.
