Brexit: The famous figures celebrating the EU referendum result

Despite its failure to persuade enough of the electorate to want to stay in the European Union, the Remain campaign enjoyed support from popular and influential high-profile figures. So much support, in fact, that its lack of efficacy is coming under scrutiny on Saturday.

But not every famous person is commiserating over the vote for a Brexit. A few raised a glass to the prospect of Britain going it alone and divorcing from the EU after 43 years in it.

Liz Hurley and Joan Collins joined Katie Hopkins and Donald Trump in celebrating the results on Friday, which saw the UK vote to leave by a majority of 52 per cent.

Other high-profile figures to back a Brexit ahead of the referendum included former footballer Sol Campbell, the actor John Cleese and former England Test cricketer Ian Botham.

The prospect of leaving the EU continues to send shockwaves through the UK this morning. A number of voters voiced regret at ticking the leave box in what has been branded a wave of “bregret” anxiety.

A parliamentary petition calling for change to voting that would trigger a second referendum on the EU has already amassed over one million votes.
