Brexit: Police believe Belfast graffiti targeting Leo Varadkar and DUP MLAs may be linked

Police believe a series of Brexit-related graffiti incidents in Belfast may be linked.

The graffiti included a threat to Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and messages opposing the post-Brexit Irish Sea border daubed at two DUP MLAs' offices.

Some observers had pointed out the graffiti appeared to have similar handwriting.

Superintendent Gerard Pollock of Belfast District confirmed police are "investigating a potential link between three previous incidents".

Graffiti threatening Mr Varadkar appeared on a shop wall at Drumart Square in the Belvoir estate in South Belfast either last Friday or Saturday.

A second graffiti message targeting the Tánaiste was scrawled on a wall in Belvoir Drive sometime between 10pm on Sunday and 4pm on Monday.

Both are being treated by police as hate crimes.

And on Tuesday last week, it was reported graffiti had been sprayed onto the shutters of MLA Christopher Stalford's office on Sandy Row and MLA Robin Newton's office on Castlereagh Street.

Mr Pollock said police will "continue our enquiries into all three of these incidents".

He appealed for anyone with information to phone police on 101 quoting reference number 450 30/01/21 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or get in touch via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport.
