Brexit plea as SNP MEP Alyn Smith urges EU to 'leave a light on' for independent Scotland

A Scottish MEP yesterday urged European leaders to “leave a light on” so an independent Scotland can “find a way home” to the EU.

The SNP’s Alyn Smith encouraged lawmakers in Strasbourg to support a separate Scottish state.

“What a sad place we are in on Brexit,” he told MEPs. “What a tragedy. So many issues we should be working on together utterly distracted by a self-inflicted disaster – entirely because the UK hasn’t made a decision on what it actually wants.”

Smith urged the parliament not to “close the doors” on those in Britain who want to remain in the EU.

He said: “There are lots of us in Scotland and elsewhere in the UK working hard to turn this round to remain within this family of nations.”

Smith added that he understood MEPs had to “respect the UK constitution” but stressed that for Scotland the best option for staying in Europe might be as an independent nation.

Smith said: “We don’t know what’s in the UK’s future. We don’t know what is in any of our future and the forces of populism are gathering in all of our nations.

“We don’t know what is in the UK’s future but I do know Scotland is a European nation. We celebrate international solidarity, we celebrate freedom of movement and if the European Union didn’t exist we would need to invent something like it.

“In Scotland if we are removed against our family of nations against our will...
independence will be our only route back. I’m asking you to leave a light on so that we can find our way home.”

European council president Donald Tusk urged the parliament to support Britons who want to cancel Brexit and stay in the EU.

He said: “You cannot betray the six million people who signed the petition to revoke article 50, the one million who marched for a people’s vote, or the increasing majority of people who want to remain in the EU.”
