Brexit Party faces review over foreign donation claims

The Electoral Commission today visited Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party offices to review its funding systems amid concerns over potential foreign donations.

Former prime minister Gordon Brown claimed yesterday the party was receiving money from “small undeclared, untraceable payments”.

The matter centres around the party’s funding model where it receives donations of under £500 through Paypal.

Political gifts under that amount do not have to be declared.

Commission staff were set to meet the party’s treasurer and are not expected to release details of discussions.

A commission spokesman said: “If there’s evidence that the law may have been broken, we will consider that in line with our enforcement policy.”

Police have charged Paul Crowther, 32, of Throckley, with common assault and criminal damage after a milkshake was thrown at Mr Farage in Newcastle yesterday.

He will appear before magistrates in North Tyneside on June 18.
