Brexit Party candidate claims video shows him being 'assaulted' by Remainer

A Merseyside Brexit Party candidate has released footage of what he claims is him being assaulted by a Remainer.

Darcy Iveson-Berkeley alleges the attack took place when he hosted a meeting with fellow Brexiteers at a local Wetherspoons pub.

Mr Iveson-Berkeley was hoping to be the Brexit Party's youngest candidate and planned to stand in Tory-held Southport at the General Election.

This has now been thrown into doubt after party leader Nigel Farage today announced that he will not run candidates in any seats currently held by Conservatives as part of a Leave Alliance.

Mr Iveson-Berkeley claims a "triggered Remainer" hit him at the Willow Grove in Southport on Thursday night.

He told the ECHO: "The guy was being a bit of a nuisance all night. He started playing the European anthem and hurling abuse.

"I got up to report him to the pub manager, and so he apologised then and left. But about 20 minutes later when I went out for a cigarette, he reappeared and was being really confrontational.

"I started to film him because it looked like he was filming me, and that's when he went for me."

The footage shows an unidentified man approach Mr Iveson-Berkeley. The conversation then becomes heated and the man can be seen knocking the Brexiteer’s phone away.

In a video he tweeted earlier on Thursday night, Mr Iveson-Berkley said: "It was quite intimidating. These Remainers, I don't what has triggered them."

Merseyside Police have confirmed they are investigating reports of a racially aggravated assault.

A spokesman said: "It was reported that at around 9.10pm, a 19-year-old man was racially abused by a man in the Willow Grove Wetherspoons, Lord Street, before he was struck to the chest

The victim sustained no injuries and CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.
