
The EU’s chief Brexit negotiator has said his side “remains committed” to striking a fair deal with the UK, but expects the same “respect” for sovereignty as Britain desires.
“In this crucial moment for the [EU and UK] negotiations, we continue to work hard with [chief UK negotiator David Frost] and his team," Michel Barnier said in a tweet on Sunday.
“The EU remains committed to a fair, reciprocal & balanced agreement. We respect the sovereignty of the UK. And we expect the same,” he said.
The post came after British Health Secretary Matt Hancock called on the EU to withdraw what he branded as “unreasonable demands” during Brexit negotiations.
A fisheries dispute has continued to be a major sticking point in Brexit negotiations.
The European Parliament had set a Sunday evening deadline for a deal to be agreed in order for it to be ratified by 31 December, when the Brexit transition period will come to an end.
With no deal made, it appears talks will likely extend through the Christmas period.
